When did I cry last?

Last night, I was trying to remember when I cried last. It’s easy to check when I last published a blog post (really long back) but not easy to remember when I cried last. That does sound like a very positive statement... but is it actually?

Not crying means that you are not sad but it can also mean that you have lost touch with your emotional side. It would be positive if there were unfavorable situations but it didn't affect you because now you no more let that affect you. Or it could also mean that it affects you but you control yourself, which is not good because it will make you bitter over a period of time...

And it left me thinking which one is really true for me? As I was thinking my memory went long back to my childhood days when I cried really bad because my mom threw out of my hand a tiny little doll which I really liked. I couldn't remember what happened before that and after that only this part when I helplessly stood there crying for it and my mom dragged me from there.

Thinking about it my eyes watered, making me realize that I have not lost my emotionality... it’s still intact. This did make me aware that the reason I haven't cried was because I have not come across any situation strong enough to make me emotional. However, now I remember when I cried last!

If you thought only your mom makes your follow a million do and don’ts, you are wrong… if you don’t believe me, see this video. A song made on this is evidence enough that all moms (well almost) are alike. I was counting the no. of lines my mom uses out of this… of course she has her original ones too. Like for instance, "keep the things you take back in place", "how much you talk on the phone" and so on. But, why didn’t they make a Dad song also, for sure my Dad is also good at it.

Face of Life

For me no answer is right or wrong maybe Google (I found it in gtalk images) can give the right answer. But it just clicked to me that if life had a face, it would be like this. No one really understands... what it is, everyone has got their own perception and they think that is the right one. Like the picture similarly for life, if one had to define life it would be difficult to decide the right or wrong maybe god can give the right answer.

I saw this image in gtalk and asked several of my friends… what they thought it was. I got various and interesting replies; like, some were, cotton ball, moon, food, asteroid, paper ball, crystal ball. Probably, a Psychologist could even tell the personality type of each person with the answers they gave.

Face of life, when you watch it carefully, it is not the most beautiful picture but it isn’t ugly either. Somewhere extremely meaningless but on the other hand has a profound look to it also.

3 Idiots... Watch it!

Everyone is talking about 3 Idiots, the movie starring Kareena Kapoor, Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, Madhavan, Boman Irani. From the time its promo hit the small screen I had been wanting to watch it... but after all the positive reviews I got from those who watched it (yet to find a single person who said its not that a great movie) I saw it today.

It is for me, a fine example of "excellence in film making". A movie that keeps you glued to the screen till its on and after its over it makes you ponder about the message it gives. Only thing that depresses me occasionally is that such movies never get Oscars but movies like Slumdog gets... SAD! However, even that doesn't matter, I am happy we still have film makers who make movies like 3 Idiots.

As I said earlier, this movie makes me ponder over the message it gives out. I thought over something too, as shown in this movie do those people who follow their hearts really outrun people in the race, in spite of not being in the race themselves? Does that really happen? Is it a fictitious end to the story or really possible? And then Aamir Khan example crossed my mind... What better example than Aamir Khan himself! He is never in the race, does only one or two movies in a year and yet he is such a successful and loved actor. The one or two movies he does becomes one of the highest revenue earner for that year. Never gets into any kind of cheap publicity to show the world that he is alive but still he is the most spoken about actor, when the discussion is about good actors in Hindi cinema.

I am convinced that the movie is not only entertaining, positive, motivating but also realistic! A must watch for people of all ages:)

Clickbank Code - Affiliate Marketing Tutorials

In the last week of May I purchased an Affiliate marketing tutorial package that guides it readers in building up an Affiliate business. The name of this package was Clickbank Code by Michael Jones. I landed on his landing page through one of the email sent to me by one of the Affiliates whose newsletter I had subscribed to, last year or the year before. 12 year old Harry Willsher from UK is the fortunate employee of a sweet factory and his unique and dream job is to taste new sweets for the sweet factory. Now isn’t that great, getting to eat sweets and alsogetting paid for it?

This news article made me think what could be some of my dream jobs. It could be dress promoter. Here the job profile would be to wear lovely dresses and walk into movie hall, malls, wedding, parties etc and promote the outfit by just looking good.

Second in the list, can be sandals and shoes tester. Wear the latest style shoes and check its comfort level. Of course, all these stuffs will remain with me only after that.

Third, be a part of research program that’s researching on whether going to beauty parlor and getting done a facial, hairspa, manicure, pedicure etc on a regular basis helps improve the skin and hair quality of a person. Wow, someone paying for all that every month and also paying me for that would be like a dream in a dream.

I would love to test mattress also. Sleep on it to test if it justifies as a good mattress or needs more improvement. So much for society service!

Now some realistic ones

Food, movie reviewer: In this job I would like to eat good food and write a review about the food, restaurant and its service. As a movie reviewer, ticket to a PVR plus popcorn expenses and in return I will review the movie. Similarly, there are a lot of other stuffs that I can very efficiently use and review, such as mobile phones, ipods, laptops etc.

Travel writing is also another cool job. My company will pay me for traveling plus the expenses incurred on it and in return, I give the perfect description about how and where I went and why everyone should or should not go there.

If only I could get lucky like Harry, anyone listening?

How to add music on blogger

Finally I have figured out how people add music playlist to their blogs. It was not as easy I thought it would be. Especially, from the website from where I got this widget, that is the imeem.com. Must admit to get that playlist widget from imeem to my blog was not at all easy… I wasted half a day to understand how it worked. But all said and done, it’s the best site for this purpose because it has this option of adding widget to your blog, plus a huge collection of songs. Before this I tried to use ilike.com but didn’t get complete song.

Similarly, to have music on your site, you can add the codes to your website and have a list of songs for your viewers. In the following video, I have shown two ways of adding the playlist. If you are a novice the first method is advisable however, no problem trying the second method if you are in a mood to explore… its not really that complicated.

Open blogger and imeem.com, first you will need to register with imeem.com.

Check the video to know, how to add your favorite songs on your blog;

Step by step procedure:

• Search for you song
• Click on Add to Quickmix
• Save playlist
• Select on home/mediatracker/playlist/
• On the bottom of the playlist, Click on MORE near 'Embed this on'
• You will see a list of options; select Blogger/Add to blogger
• On clicking on that you will be taken to your blogger dashboard
• Select the blog where you want to display the playlist.
• Click on 'Add Widget'
• Save and view your blog
• If you would like to remove the Search option from the playlist then;
• Click on the song gadget in the dasboard to open the code and amend the code as shown in the blog.

Method 2:

• On the bottom of the playlist on imeem.com, you will see an option 'Embed' select all and copy.
• Come to your blogger dasboard/layout/add gadget/html-javascript
• Put a suitable title and in the content area paste the code, delete the code for search option and save.

The playlist is ready for your viewers...!!

How to create navigation links in your blog

This is for people who own more than one blog and want a navigation menu in your blog. With a navigation menu in your blog, visitors to one of the blogs can access the other blogs by clicking on the navigation link. To understand better, check out the main menu on the top, in my blog.

For instance, if you want to have navigation for your blogs www.iluv2travel.blogspot.com and www.myleisuremoments.blogspot.com here’s how you do it;

1. Go to Layout/Page Element

2. Click on Add a Gadget

3. Give a suitable title like for my blog I have named it as Main Menu

4. Copy and paste the below code on the ‘content’ area. Please remember to replace the site URL and title with that of your blog. For better understanding, I have marked in blue the link and texts that needs be replaced.

5. Save

6. Select a proper placement for this menu.

At Blogger Buster you will find other ways to create navigation bar, but try it only if you are an advanced blogger.

Make your own cartoon strips

I am always on net trying to find something new and interesting. Today i found a site that lets you create your own Cartoon strip. Its easy and fun. I have made one such comic strip as you can see here.You can do it too and make your blog more fun for the viewers. Tips on Blogging

As you can see, I have just about finished with the basic layout of my main blog; there is a lot I can share about my experience of the whole process. Lend me your ear all those who want their blog to be out of the crowd, and yet pleasing for the eyes and brain.

According to me, every blogger should experiment with different looks and styles for their blog.

To begin with, I got this free template from one of Tweeter group, you can see link to the site at the bottom of this page (but please use a different template not this same one, remember you want your blog to be out of the crowd). After downloading the template, I realized I can’t upload it to my template area because I have been using the classic template format. Until now classic format was easy for me than the new template format.

Earlier, I never understood the widget thing in the new template format and I always thought the classic template format was better than the new one because you could add so many features to your blog with some html knowledge. But I was wrong, even with the new template you can add features (and a lot more easily), that are called gadgets and you can find them under Layout/Page elements/ Add gadgets.

On the blogger dashboard/layout/edit html at the bottom you have the option of reverting to classic templates. If you are already using this option to use the new format you will have to click on the dashboard/templates/customize design. I clicked on this option (before that I saved my old template code), and uploaded the xml file of the new template that you can see now here on the blog. That’s very easy and the template is in place. After this slight changes were made to the html code to suit my audience. Like for example, ‘About me’, ‘Archives’ etc where not in English I changed it to English.

This gadget thing in the new blogger is amazing, it definitely makes your blog really cool, however, sadly all good gadgets were broken or some didn’t set in properly in my new template. So sadly, I was left with very few choices, but even those few choices are making my blog look full.

According to me, every blogger should experiment with different looks and styles for their blog. It not only vents your creativity but also gives your reader a better blog to look at.

On the net we can find so many ill-treated blogs with bad background and font combination that can make the visitor blind if they stare at the blog for a few minutes. In India though we have started to have this blog fever a few years back and its at its peak now, very few people take out the time to make their blog, a blog to remember.

To make your blog one of those few blogs, here are a few tips;

1. Search the net for free templates
2. Take care that your blog has the right background and font combination. I have seen some blog with good contents but with their choice of background and font it’s was difficult to read more than one post.
3. Use words that are a part of our daily life. Why use fathom when you can use understand…. Fathom is not something that everyone understands. Keep all those words for the time when you write to get a literature award. Please note there is no literature award available for online blogs!
4. Keep your content limited to less than 500 words. I have crossed that limit this time but trust me I have tried to use the minimum no. of words here. There can be exceptions when you are explaining a process but the thumb rule is the shorter the better because people have lot of other things to do when online.
5. Keep surfing the net for good blogs and take ideas from those blogs.
6. Last but not the least, make the most of the tools that blogger.com provides to its users.

Do not Disturb (DND)

Once, long time back, out of greed for an assured prize I participated in MTV roadies contest. I did get the details on how to redeem my prize but unfortunately the prize amount was below the minimum redemption offered by the third party site. Which means, I did not get anything but MTV got my number with which they kept updating me with silly updates. For sometime now I was thinking of how to get myself out of its list. And in my attempt to do so, I kept sending them wrong messages that cost me Rs.3 per sms.

Finally today, I found out how this can be done… it was simple yet difficult. When you want to stop receiving such messages you should message ‘DND’ to the no (in this case it was 56882). DND is an acronym for Do not Disturb. In India also we have something that protects us from unsolicited calls and sms, its the DND.

Ever wondered why so many websites offers you free sms and calling service? It’s because once you register with these websites you are allowing them to sell your no. to marketing companies who can then disturb you as and when they want!

There is more to DND, like some cellular company gives you the option of DND service. Opting for this service will spare you from calls/sms coming from the specific cellular company. But, not sure if it really works!

Slumdog on my blog (That rhymes!)

Everyone is talking about Slumdog, positively, negatively, ignorantly but is definitely talking. Even my dad wanted to watch slumdog, I can’t recollect when was the last time he said that he wants to see a particular movie. When I open the newspapers I see something written religiously about slumdog, when I read the online news I find something about slumdog… now after such constant exposure it’s so predictable of me to have something written about slumdog on my blog, plus I actually had something to say about what I saw.

In one particular scene, the teenage Jamal tells some tourists, “You wanted to see the real India, this is the real India”.

There have been a lot of comments coming from Indian celebrities about the movie. Our bollywood actors have congratulated the movie makers on their success. Aamir Khan said "I have seen Slumdog and the film didn't work for me". Mr. Amitabh Bachchan has a lot to say about Slumdog in his blog, and looks like he is not happy with it either. But the best statement came from Mr. Narendra Modi and he says, “If Congress had not been around… slums would not have been there. If slums had not existed there would not be any slumdogs and consequently the movie (Slumdog Millionaire) would not have been made.”

“So, the Oscar should go to the Congress”, said Modi.

That was the most sarcastic statement made for Slumdog (or Congress) ever.

Initially, I thought it was a good movie but definitely not so good to get so many Oscars, there has definitely been better Indian movies. This makes me curious to know about the Oscar’s criteria of judging movies. How exactly do they decide that a particular movie deserves something prestigious as the Oscar? I have never been the “Oh this movie has got an Oscar award… so I have to watch it ” type of a person but now for sure I would never be getting too impressed when I hear that the movie I am planning to watch has got an Oscar.

Good news --- After Slumdog, Westerners want to come to Mumbai. Bad news --- They want to come to Mumbai to see Dharavi Slums! This is so frightening, after many years India finally shed the title ‘country of snake charmers’, and now for god sake don’t tell me it was only to replace it with the title ‘country of slums’!! It is a good question if only someone can answer, why are some people so obsessed with showing other countries in such bad light?? So what if the author of slumdog is an Indian. The same filmmakers could have made a movie on “The 3 mistakes of my life” or any other book.

But, I don’t blame the director / producer of Slumdog because they were only showing what people wanted to see. They were probably aware that if they made a movie on the positives of India, it may not do well in the international market (like so many of Indian movies). Just like so many of other good Indian movies.

In one particular scene, the teenage Jamal tells some tourists, “You wanted to see the real India, this is the real India”. This happens when he is beaten up by their driver. Now how many of us think it is the real India. My opinion is that it may be a part of real India but definitely not whole of real India. So my point is... why do these foreign filmmakers want to project India as a poor nation and every wrong thing possible happens in the real India??? And worse still why only such movies are showered with the best awards… there is definitely something wrong somewhere.

Book Review

Just last week, I finished reading a good book and couldn’t stop myself from writing something about it. While reading this book, for the first time I stopped to count the full stops in the sentences, and also first time I finished a novel so fast… within a week. Usually, I take months to finish one book.

After reading this book, I thought if ever I write a book it has to be like this. It has all the ingredients to keep an average brained person like me interested… namely, simple to understand, witty and excellent story. The book I am referring to here is Chetan Bhagat’s latest book, “The 3 mistakes of my life”.

The story is about a young business man and the 3 mistakes of his life that changed his life. Reading the title of the book, I thought it was another personality development book, but was surprised to find out, it was not. Yes, it was a story revolving around Business, Religion and Cricket. And in some places I would find it irritating to read the scores but that was okay, it can be skipped.

I have yet to read Chetan’s other two books but managed to see the movie made on “A night at call center”. Didn’t like the movie though, I was wondering… if there was a movie to be made on “The 3 mistakes of my life”, which actors I would like to see playing the characters of the story. Hmmm let’s see…

Valentine's Day

Agreed V-Day is not rooted to Indian culture but should that be a reason for so much hatred for this occasion? All the hue and cry that’s surrounding V-day is completely meaningless. People who are supporting this kind of protest need to celebrate this day the most, so that feeling of love and care replaces the grudge in their hearts... against people celebrating it.

One point of time in my life, even I thought that you don’t need a day to express your love, what is happening is more a display of love than real love. But now I think one day in the year dedicated to love is a must especially in these times of hatred. So what if it’s commercialized... all the commercialization creates such healthy environment all around us. I mean doesn’t it look lovely when we enter a restaurant and see heart shaped balloons.

Also, when an occasion is celebrated universally it generates more joy than celebrating it individually. For instance, Diwali is a festival of lights and we light diyas (mud lamps) on diwali. Ideally speaking, we can do it any day but it brings more joy during Diwali because everyone around us is doing that, which makes the whole ambience cheerful and positive. Similarly it is for Valentines Day or any other festival.

By default we have very less occasions to enjoy life due to the bad times created by the terrorists, recession, and other stress. And instead of enjoying every happy moment that comes our way to the fullest, if we spend these days also grumbling about culture and stuff, then I guess animals have a better life than us.

So smile, celebrate and enjoy V-day not just on 14 Feb but if possible every day… because love is the need of the hour.

Recession 2008-20??

Towards the end of 2008 recession hit hard almost all of the global village and now financial gurus warn of a tougher time ahead. Scary as it sounds it may actually happen. Everywhere around me I hear about people losing jobs, companies closing down or salary cut. And what hurts the most is the increasing number of suicides… due to the bad fall in share market indirectly connected to recession.

One thing that makes me wonder is how did this recession enter, I understand its shortage of funds so where did all the money that existed, disappear??

I asked a friend and he told me, few people have got richer than they were, making many others poor. And I thought the best solution to reverse the recession would be to put more money into the market and generate more business. Would it not help in curbing recession? But the same friend told me if those people thought like that then there would be no recession in the first place.

So who else can discontinue this recession?? Maybe celebrities they have so much money why can’t they generate business? But would they… is the question. Seems like recession is here to stay for sometime unless there is some Divine intervention… which we all hope happens.

In school, I loved the word Recess but Recess with the additional ION doesn’t looking appealing at all!!

Reality shows v/s Teleserials

While the country is getting more involved keeping a track of the difficult political situation; I would like to take your attention away from the tension arising between India and Pak to war between actors acting in teleserials and actors participating in reality shows. Each claim that the other type of entertainment is fading away. While the serial actors say that people are fed up of reality shows, reality show actors want to believe that it’s the daily soaps people are fed up with!

But then, what is the truth? What are people really watching? As a viewer, I can vouch for the fact that people are watching both. However, quality matters… if there is some real entertainment then people are taking time to watch or else no. If there are 30 serials on air now, I watch about 3 similarly there are some dance reality shows that I watch too.

Talking about dance reality shows, on Saturday at 8pm I put my TV on to watch Nach Baliye (Star Plus), Boogie Woogie (Sony), Chota Packet Bada Dhamaka (CPBD) (Zee TV). Except for Nach Baliye other two shows had kids performing but to my surprise (not really because I experienced this last week also) I was hooked on more to these shows then Nach Baliye… why? The quality!!

While Nach Baliye continued with some crap drama, the other two shows were showing what they were supposed to show, brilliant dance performances!! And even when the dance started in Nach Baliye it was no where near to the dance performed by the kids, especially the CPBD kids. Just imagine, these tiny humans were more capable of giving a good show than the grown ups!!

And going by the poor standards of Nach Baliye, if I had my regular serial at that hour I would have stuck to it rather than watching the silly off-stage drama (fake). To sum up, it’s not about reality shows or serials that’s popular with viewers it is the quality of the program.

So it goes to say, that it’s not necessarily competition between teleserials and reality shows its competition between the good and bad quality. Also a piece of advice for all reality show makers, shun the fake drama or even if its real edit it… people have had enough of it and just show them what they have been promised… the talent show!

Terror attack on Mumbai - Some unanswered questions

For the whole of 27 Nov, if there was anything going on in the minds and mouths of Mumbaikars, it was the brutal terror attack in South Mumbai. Each of us has got some questions popping in our minds and I’m no exception. One such question that comes to my mind… is it so easy for some 30 people to come and kill more than 100 people and leave about 300 others injured??

If this could happen in a 5 star hotel… it could also happen in malls and other similar public places. I remember the security checks, which happens in malls these days… will that serve any purpose now? I mean now the terrorists will straight away shoot those security guys and go in or what???

Another question that I have been thinking for long is… Could such attacks happen in countries like Australia or UK? Where I believe the defence against terrorism is far better organized!

Why our police men had to lose their lives for the leniency showed by the government against terrorism?

Our honorable PM says, they will take terrorism seriously and I really hope they do or the day is not far when the same may happen to our ministers and bureaucrats. People all over the country are talking about the terror attacks, one such interesting talk in one of the news channel was a group discussion.

It was between Ashok Pandit, Alyquee Padamsee, Rahul Bose. Alyquee Padamsee made some very interesting comments. He said, “If our government doesn’t have the required expertise to handle/avoid such situation it should send a training team to Israel or USA”, well said!! Does our government even consider such options??

The common man has tolerated it for long but now if terrorism in India is not controlled, next would be the who’s who turn to bear the brunt. Terrorism has taken a step forward… from planting bombs to straight away walking into the country and making it a battle field, now we can only wait and watch how many steps ahead our government takes to prevent such situations in future.

Media Made…!

Under Journalism, human interest stories have always had a special mention. Common man is most intrigued with happenings about others like him. But, the way human interest stories are showing to look like yellow journalism is kind of scary. Of late, it’s the Aarushi Talwar and Niraj Grover case that has been in news, round the clock. Comparatively, its Aarushi’s murder that has got more sympathy from people and so media has been cashing on it.

It is a disaster for the Talwar family, but who cares! People have to know the truth and media has to bring out the truth. Who cares, if they are adding salt to the already shattered Talwar’s wounds. I empathize completely with Aarushi’s parents even if (0.01% chance) they were accidentally responsible for her death. No punishment from the law can make them suffer more than they already are suffering.

Another story about Niraj Grover murder was something flashing in the news channel and newspaper for sometime. Now it’s not so much in news probably the reason is media’s ability to gauge that people are more interested to know about Aarushi. According to the police, it was Maria’s boyfriend, who killed Niraj and YET it was Maria whose pictures were flashed everywhere. She was portrayed as the main Villain, I wonder why! To lose their young child (only child)and IF due to their own mistake because of one weak moment... their guilt, their loss will be any day much more than any punishment awarded by the court of law. And nothing proved yet, it could also be someone else who has committed the crime. In that case, how fair is the Media being to the Talwars? Have they ever grilled the terrorists as much as they are grilling the Talwars?? And all this only to increase their TRPs!!

Media has clearly been too irresponsible in the recent times, but now I’m beginning to wonder, if Media is getting out of hand. Will soon Media be strong contenders to the corrupt politicians??

Amitabh Bachchan’s Blog

Blogging world is got all the more in news with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan’s blog. I saw a small clip of it in the newspaper and couldn’t wait to read more. As the rest of the world goes on and on about Big B and how big a fan they are of Big B; to be very honest I was never such a big fan of Mr. Bachchan or any other actor for that matter. I always liked him in comedy roles and from his recent movies, enjoyed Chinni Kum.

However, after reading his blog I have definitely become a fan of Mr. Bachchan, the writer. I’m not too sure if he has written all that on the blog, on his own or appointed a writer for that but I am sure the thoughts are his own. As a professional writer, I have always been on a lookout for a good piece of writing which is a combination of great thoughts with the correct use of language… and Big B’s blog has got that perfect combination.

It is not too difficult to make out after reading his blog that Mr. Bachchan is a well read, well traveled, and humble personality. His blog, a reflection of his thoughts is evidence enough that even after being so successful he has retained the basic human values in him.

For Mr. Bachchan this may have been the best way to put forth his view on certain issues, that’s nothing but media made (Hopefully, at least now, certain media people would act more responsibly and wisely).

The profound thinking, good and apt use of words (simple language yet interesting) is what I liked the most about his blog. So those who have still not read the blog please do.

Love or Happiness

May This Holi, Color your lives with Love & Happiness.

Today as I was writing this Holi wish, a thought crossed my mind. What is more important to make living better… LOVE or HAPPINESS? Although having both would be the best thing to happen but in case if we had to choose between the both what would it be? When I asked one of my friend this is what she told me, If you have love around, you are happy...if you are happy, your life is full of love.

However, there can be many instances when one is missing. Like, when we are sick there is no happiness but we are more loved and cared at those times. And when an individual is climbing the ladders of success, there is a feeling of achievement which brings happiness. But, this could be the time when they are more lonely and longing for genuine love.

There could be more such situations when either love or happiness is missing from our lives. To think about it, love soothes the soul and happiness the mind or physical self. Love has the power to instigate happiness however happiness cannot necessarily develop room for love. Considering all this, ideally speaking love should weigh more than happiness.

Is it really the case? I doubt. People are so much running behind happiness. Love is gradually diminishing. On a positive note, running for happiness for too long would one day, trigger our realization. And as people realize the difference love would grow like never before.

When there is no happiness around it helps to fill the heart with love than with frustration and depression. I can hear some say, easier said than done... but try we can...!

One more year has passed. And like every year, while wishing each other, I expect a few people to say, "Years are passing so soon". This is one common line used and re-used every year.

And talking about new year a mention about the new year resolution is fair enough. I really do not wait till new year to make resolutions but then again I am not too famous for making resolutions either. And to sticking to it is another story in itself.

But this year I want to make a resolution; to be more cool and stay happy, no matter what comes or what doesn't. Simple as it sounds, hope I can actually make it happen. And before I wrap up this post... I extend my new year wishes to all, with the following message I got from a friend.

A punishment that deserves praises

With one eye turned blind and a disfigured face, 18 year old Renu, probably would have got some signs of justice coming her way. A Delhi trial court has rightly given a life term imprisonment to the villain of Renu’s life, Yashpal.

Yashpal chose to ruin Renu’s life by throwing acid on her face because she chose to turn down his advances. Such instances are common in India but what is not common is the punishment given for this crime. Lot of such horrible creatures that have spoiled, innocent girls lives; have walked home free without any punishment or with minor punishment, especially in Mumbai.

When one goes to find, there will be many cases, where a girl’s life has turned upside down after a brute threw acid on her. Some minor and some grave to the extent that can send a chill down the reader’s spine. As in the case of Fatima who succumbed to the injuries caused after her husband poured acid on her and also made her drink it. So far, this is the worst case I have come across.

Two questions hit my mind. One, what is the ideal punishment for making a person’s life so difficult and ugly? Secondly, should Acid be so easily available? If I had my way I would say, the ideal punishment is tit for tat. Do the same with such mindless creatures; let them too face the scar, for life.

And acid should never be made available easily. One should be made to apply for acid like for passport, a person buying acid needs to get his address verified in the police station. It’s no joke… involving the police may instill fear in the person, if he is taking it for a wrong act and also the time taken to get acid may change the person’s mind.

Sensex at 18000 points, moving towards 19,000

Last one week, saw a sudden rise in the Sensex figure. As much people are rejoicing the trend, there are varied assumptions made for the near future of the stock exchange. While a lot feel this trend will continue further, some are afraid that this might be the silence before the storm. After a few days, it might just come banging down.

To understand the Stock market has never been so easy. Experts have been giving their timely opinions and advice, only to discover something different happening. To know what the close future of the Indian stock market is going to be, one need to know the reason for its remarkable leap to the 18000 mark.

According to a source, Foreign Investors are looking towards India for safe Investments. With other country’s stock market not too stable, India provides the required stability. If this truly is the reason for the growth of Sensex, then it is very obvious that the growth will continue further.

Other reason for the leap could be manipulation by Internal or External investors. This has been done more than once in the past, so could be possibly done once again to increase the share value for personal benefit. As much one would like to think that this may not be the reason for the increase stock market is witnessing, it could be the reason.

It is very difficult to determine what the real cause could be, however it does matter to know, if the healthy trend will remain this way for long or not. My take on it is, considering the serious political crisis, surrounding the nation today; would the Foreign Investors really choose this time to invest in India? Generally, any such situation dampens the stock market, so how come this time it has instigated it instead?

If all this has happened genuinely, then is nothing less than a miracle. But then isn’t India known to be a miracle country!

We all know about bookmarking, it’s a wonderful tool to reduce the pressure from our memory cells. Like a site? Bookmark it under favorites or under bookmarks and keep checking regularly, to see if anything new is added to the site. Now wouldn’t it be better if you get to know whether anything is updated on the site, even before you open the site?

This is exactly what RSS feeds does for you, it brings your favorite sites to you, saving your time going to it and wasting time if there isn’t anything new stored in for you. But, if you have many sites that you want to check out, your browser is mostly likely to get crowded.

So to take it a step further, Google reader (even yahoo and msn reader) lets you save all your favorite sites on one page. Like you log on to your gmail and check if you have any new mails, you can log on to Google reader and check if there is anything new in your favorite sites.

Viewing your website in a Google reader is different from viewing it on the site, on Google reader you will only see the contents with any attached image that it may have. All the other features of the site won’t be present; to view that you will have to visit the site.

Sketchcasting is when you draw to explain a process, like you would do on a white board. This you can either do using a Tablet PC or with a Digi Pen. And for those who love to draw with a mouse (really gifted ones), can make the most out of sketchcasting.

Before you begin to draw make sure you have put the sketchcaster on (sketchcaster records onscreen action). Once done, save it under the avi file option. Upload it on any of the videohosting sites like youtube and put the link on your blog.

Unlike a text blog, there are some expenses to bear, if you would really like to try sketchcasting. Mainly on the Tablet PC, but if you have already got one, then you should definitely give sketchcasting a try. Even otherwise, a Digi pen and pad is an economical substitute for Tablet PC. Also, you will need Mic and speaker to explain the activity.

For the other requirements namely Screencaster, Drawing Progam you can avail the free versions from Internet.

This kind of a blog can be very useful for people associated with Designing, Movies (story board), Business developers/ Planners, Educational sites etc. There can be a thousand more uses of sketchcasting, but it remains to be seen how well it’s implemented in the cyber world.

How reliable is Wikipedia?

While researching on the Internet, search engines play a vital role. Among search engines Google, Yahoo and MSN are the most common ones. Personally, I use Google and Yahoo for lot of my research work.

During such search, I noticed that for almost all my searches Wikipedia was seen on the 1st page of the search results. And I was left wondering if that was a good thing or no. Some may feel what possibly can be wrong with it, but I beg to differ.

Many regular surfers know that the contents in Wikipedia can easily be edited by anybody. Although there are editors who watch over the contents, firstly their credibility is doubtful and secondly it is difficult for the editors to keep a watch over the contents on a daily basis. Imagine,I edit a certain section today and the editor sees it after a week, in between all those visitors would accept the information put by me as true.

Once I was searching information on an Indian King and was dumbfounded on the things written about him. This was when I was not aware of the fact that the contents were editable by anyone. And I ended up believing the information to be a fact! I am sure there are still many others who may be collecting information from Wikipedia considering it to be a reliable source. As I mentioned before anybody using search engines are likely to land up on Wikipedia more often since it mostly appears on the 1st page of search results.

Isn’t this a cause of concern? We have school / college children using Internet for school projects. Moreover we are also at a great risk of knowing and spreading wrong information.

It wouldn’t be right to say Wikipedia only has distorted facts, many times the information given there may be right, however how are we to make out if the facts are correct or not? The only solution then is to cross check before taking any information to be true.

The Agony of a SIFY customer

We have now finished our 2nd anniversary to the subscription of Sify internet connection and it’s high time I publicly reveal the agony we have faced in this time period.

For about a year we had the Rs. 410 package and on the suggestion of one Sify employee, we switched over to a more expensive package… Rs. 791 to be precise, in the hope that atleast then the connection will show some signs of a broadband connection. But as our bad Karma had it, there was absolutely no difference! The connection can disrupt once a while that’s completely understandable but the connection working fine once in a while, how does that sound?

Recently, there was a slight rainfall for a day or two and our connection disappears for 5/6 days. If this was not annoying enough the girl at the local sify office has this “I am getting my salary what do I care if you have the connection or not” attitude adding fuel to the fire.

We all know Mumbai had a heavy rainfall on 23/24 June but our Sify connection had gone on leave from 21st onwards. In June I doubt if we had even 5 days of proper connection.

However it would be wrong to say that the connection is bad all the time, the days of the month when its time for them to collect the rentals it’s working super… no interruption and no slowdown! That’s the time of the month when we realise that ours is a broadband connection.

Almost every month in these two years we had a percentage of our phone bill coming from the calls made to the Sify call center and local office.

Worst affected are ones who do online share trading, when the market goes up and you want to sell or when the market goes down and want to buy, you will be on the phone talking to one of the Sify Customer care executive.

And someone earning a livelihood from Internet, deadlines are missed…because Internet connection remains dead. Once in a while this can be told to the client but not always, as a result you lose out on opportunities!

Now if you are wondering why am I discussing this with you instead of simply throwing away the connection? It’s to warn you against a major disaster, if you have any plans of getting a Sify connection. Nobody warned us and so we undergo all this mental torture but you don’t have to. If you are getting a connection just for timepass then it is alright but if you have serious work in mind then think again. You might just end up working full time to get the connection back.

Mehandi / Hawsonia Inermis

From the time I can remember, I have always been an absolute admirer of a beautifully drawn mehandi and its soothing smell. A must in Indian weddings mehandi is generously and beautifully applied on the brides and many places also the bridegroom’s hands, followed by the close relatives and whoever else wants to. The whole marriage atmosphere becomes all the more auspicious with the delicate fragrance of Mehandi. With some, there is a custom of writing the groom’s name in a discreet manner on the bride’s hand; the name forms a part of the design. That later has to be found by the groom himself.

Like a Botanist would describe, when the leaves of ‘Lawsonia alba’ are grinded with water till a paste is formed, is when it gets the recognition of Mehandi. The modern approach is to first dry the leaves then powder it. It is very difficult to trace the origin of Mehandi; while some claim it was brought to India by one of the Invaders, there are other learnt ones who have evidence to believe its use existed in ancient India.

There are quite a lot of beliefs and practices associated with Mehandi. According to a certain tradition a newly wed bride is kept away from any house-hold work until the wedding mehandi in her hands completely fades. Therefore in the olden days large floral designs were put on a bride’s hands that would take long to fade, hmmm… planning and scheming started early!

It is also said that Mehandi keeps away all evil spirits and negative energies. While in some parts of the world Mehandi is considered to bring good fortune and prosperity and for this reason they apply mehandi on the main door of their house. In Egypt centuries ago, before the mummification process the hair, toes and finger nails of the bodies were brushed with a coating of henna.

Previously I only had a liking for its visual and fragrance effects however now I have also discovered the medicinal properties of Mehandi. Namely, it does wonder to minor skin diseases, works positively on dry skin, adds volume to hair. Apart from the mehandi paste, there are researches to prove the positive effect on joint pains from the oil extracted from Mehandi leaves.

It is undoubtedly one of the best gifts of nature with no negative effects, although a word of caution would be to stay away from black mehandi. It comprises of certain harmful chemicals that may damage the skin and never get mehandi applied from those sitting on roadside using block mehandi. They don’t use mehandi but some coloured liquid which may again harm the skin.

Last few decades have seen a rise in the interest of western countries towards this herb more for decoration purpose than its medicinal value. It is in the best interest of all to know about its benefits and make its best possible use.

My take on Indian Ads

As a kid, I found Advertisements more entertaining than actual programs that were aired. My mind was so much into it that I would visualize and re-create ads in my own way; god knows where that talent disappeared as I grew up. One of my most favorite was Hawkins Ad with Neena Gupta singing… Hawkins ki siti bhaji…siti hi siti bhaji Hawkins pressure cooker!! For atleast half an hour after that ad was over I would sing that song so very gladly, maybe that’s why I still remember it.

After I grew up a little we played a game similar to Dumb charades but instead of recognizing movies the opponent had to recognize Ads (forgot what the game was called). That’s when I started to remember all those ads that were rarely shown, so that our opponent team could never recognize the ads.

With the passing years similar to other changes that have occurred all around, the world of ads has also changed. The biggest positive change I observe today is that Ad makers aren’t shy of experimenting with new concepts. And the biggest negative change is rise in Celebrity ads, negative because common identifies with the common man better than a celebrity. Of course there are exceptions like Aamir Khan doing Coke ads that’s because the actor is so good with his work that for that moment one forgets he is Aamir Khan.

These days following are the top 3 ads that gets my award….

1. Obviously Aamir Khan’s Coke ad ( Lagte hain hum alag alag par andar se hain --- same same mah) This ad in addition to being very entertaining has a deep message. If thought deeply it says so much about all human beings having more or less the same fears, problems etc but on so many occasions we are left thinking high or low of others.
2. Times jobs ad where the guy is inflated while working but when he gets his salary he feels so small. So true happened with me too.
3. Hutch ad that shows three cute small girls talking about their dog. Children are ruling the ad world; every second ad has a kid in it. And this is the cutest ad of all.

While most of the festivals are celebrated during day time... Deepawali and Mahashivratri are two such festivals that give more significance to night.

For those who arent aware... story of Mahashivratri begins like this:
After the samundra manthan (Churning of the sea, thats another story altogether). Alongwith a lot of other things, came Halahala... a dangerous poison that could finish the entire universe. Before this poison could spread all over, Lord shiva drank whole of it and here's where the story of Mahashivratri begins.

Lord Shiva had to be kept awake that night to prevent the poison from flowing down his throat. Hence all the Devotees spent the night...singing songs in honor of Lord Shiva to keep him awake. This is why Mahashivratri is also a test of the true devotee.

Even to this day, on Mahashivratri people stay awake whole night (Jaagran) and sing Bhajans.

Talking about Bhajans... there is one from the movie Bhairavi --- OM NAMAH SHIVAYA. I had been searching for this song since long and now finally found it on cooltoad.

After I found the song... I wanted the lyrics however nowhere on the net it was available. So finally I wrote the lyrics for anyone searching like me. This song definitely has a soothing effect on the listener.

I had a tough time writing this song because of all the musical notes in between... and doubtlessly its going to be equally difficult to sing those notes unless you are are trained singer.

In India, mostly celebrities means Bollywood stars. Bollywood is in integral part of average Indian... and what is the Integral part of Bollywood??? Songs...!! what else. Without songs hindi movies are like cakes without icing... a movie with good songs maybe a hit even if it lacks on other principles of good film making (if there are any) but its very rare that a film without songs will do well with Indian audience.

I for one, went to see Titanic in a theatre only because I thought I will get to see Celine Dion song My heart will go on... full screen. And came out disappointed.... heart broken.

With new techniques introduced every day into the Hindi music industry, songs are getting better and better.... still its the Old film songs that still remains a craze for many. Probably for its depth and simplicity. Personally, I like them all... my love for hindi songs doesnt have a time barrier.

In this Internet era most of the songs can be downloaded or atleast heard online... dont know if its legal or what. But Internet has become the first choice for all Internet savvy people to get their favourite songs from the net.

Freedom in its true sense means the freedom to take decisions about her life.... But that kind of freedom was not found in her life anywhere... It appeared as if the decisions were hers..... however they were only the reflections of others mind and thoughts.

Why does she has to bother about what would others think and not do what she really wanted to do? These others were those who hardly cared.....when would she break free of others influence on her decisions...
